Currently serving personnel can be seen by their medical officer or GP, who may refer them on to the Department of Community Mental Health Team (DCMH), if they feel they require specialist help. This may include assessment by a mental health nurse, or a Psychiatrist (a doctor that specialises in treating mental health problems).
Defence psychiatry is occupationally focused, and their aim is to give the help that is needed to get people back to work or maintained functionally in work. It is not often detrimental to a career, but a mental health problem will more likely lead to the end of a career if it is not addressed.
Some currently serving men and women think that going to seek help with their mental health could negatively impact their career, this is not the case.
