Primary Mental Health Services
Primary care (GP) is often the first point of contact for people suffering from a mental health concern. Common mental health problems include anxiety, depression, panic disorder, OCD and PTSD.
MPFT has played a key role in the introduction of Primary Care based Mental Health Practitioners. This has enabled people to have their needs assessed by a trained mental health professional at their own GP surgery. This direct route helps reduce waiting times and allows people to be seen in a familiar environment. To help explain how this works we have a short video about Mental Health Practitioners in Primary Care.
Service users are supported to access a range of services, interventions and resources to meet the identified needs, these include mental health services, voluntary and community services and social support which can help address the underlying causes or challenges contributing to those needs.
One of the services people can be supported to access is NHS Talking Therapies. Formerly known as IAPT, Talking Therapy offers a range of psychological interventions tailored to the individual's needs.
Interventions are agreed collaboratively with people to ensure options are explored and will meet people’s individual needs.
Serious Mental Illnesses are usually treated in Secondary Care Services. These include anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychosis, and other complex mental health conditions which significantly impact the daily lives of service users.
Secondary Care includes services for ADHD & Autism, Older Adults and Dementia Services, Early Intervention, and Intensive Life Skills. We also have range of partner providers and voluntary sector organisations. These partner providers offer support with the wider aspects that impact mental well-being, such as housing, financial well-being support and lifestyle services. We have a useful video about our partner providers if you'd like more information.
Integrated Mental Health Teams
Within Secondary Care, 6 Integrated Mental Health Teams provide assessment, intervention, and treatments. These teams receive referrals from GPs and other organisations, including self-referrals into our Mental Health and Social Inclusion Hub.
Integrated Mental Health Teams are made up of:
Community Mental Health Nurses
Community Mental Health Practitioners (CMHPs)
Healthcare Support Workers
Medical Staffing
Occupational Therapists
Psychiatrists
Psychologists
Social Workers
Voluntary Sector Partners
Inpatient Mental Health Care
Inpatient Units or Wards offer round the clock care for individuals experiencing acute mental health difficulties. Our wards are equipped with the necessary resources to provide a safe environment for service users. Dedicated teams of professionals deliver comprehensive care tailored to an individual's needs. We work with service users to use their voice in creating tailored care plans, helping them work towards agreed goals. The length of time a service user spends on a ward will depend on their individual needs and wellbeing. We aim to treat and discharge patients as soon as possible as we understand that recovery is often best achieved in a home environment. Specialist discharge teams are on hand to continue to support a patient after they leave a ward to ensure their ongoing recovery.
We also have specialist inpatient facilities including:
