MPFT service features in new national NHS Talking Therapies LGBTQ+ Positive Practice Guide page thumbnail

The commitment of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Talking Therapies to LGBTQ+ inclusion has been recognised with it featuring in a new national NHS Positive Practice Guide.

The service, provided by Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) is among a handful of NHS teams to have been selected to be featured in the inaugural Talking Therapies LGBTQ+ Positive Practice Guide, published by NHS England and the LGBT Foundation.

The guide is the first of its kind aimed at supporting NHS Talking Therapies services to achieve equity for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and other sexual minority (LGBTQ+) community in terms of access and service delivery.

The service offers treatment and support for people aged 16+ living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin who are struggling with anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Within the guide, the service talks about the work it has done to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion and involvement, including its team of community-based Senior Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWP), who actively engage with communities throughout Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin about NHS Taking Therapies. The PWPs have sought to support people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQI+) to access services, whilst also engaging with agencies supporting older adult LGBTQI+ populations.

The guide also shares the experiences of a carer, alongside therapists working within the team regarding how the service has exemplified its commitment to inclusivity.

Caroline Dugen-Williams, Clinical Lead for the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Talking Therapies service said: “The reality is that people identifying as LGBTQ+, on average experience higher levels of psychological difficulties than heterosexual people. It’s therefore vitally important that, when seeking support for mental health issues such as depression, anxiety or PTSD, their experience of accessing and receiving NHS Talking Therapies is one of positivity and inclusivity.

“I’m honoured to work in a service that commits itself so passionately to delivering Talking Therapies services that are welcoming for all; and I’m equally proud we have featured in the first Talking Therapies LGBTQ+ Positive Practice Guide. This is a real testament to the work we do.”

The service offers a range of talking therapies, including short term cognitive behavioural group courses, telephone and online cognitive behavioural interventions; and higher intensive offers, such as 1:1 cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), group based CBT for trauma, counselling and other psychotherapies for depression. The service has also launched a new LGBTQ+ psychological wellbeing group for anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ and is struggling with their mental health. Anyone with depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress can self-refer.

Individuals registered with a Shropshire or Telford and Wrekin GP and who are not currently being seen by another mental health team can access the service without needing to see their GP. Details are available on the service website.
